The Office Christmas Party in 2020

No! It’s not too early for Christmas!

And for all you Humbugs out there, keep reading for a couple of remote Halloween party ideas… You’re welcome.

Now back to Christmas!

Who knows what Christmas will look like this year?

This year has been full of uncertainty and last-minute changes, so the end of year office party may not look like the years before.

So here are some ideas for how to celebrate Christmas with the guys in the office. Hopefully we won’t need too many backup plans...

  1. Christmas Movie Night

We all know that a festive film is the best way to get into the spirit.

Get a Christmas classic up on the big screen, individual bags of popcorn and some socially distanced seating and you’ve got yourself a cozy Christmas night in at the office.

The big question is do you choose a hot chocolate or an egg nog?

  1. Ice Skating

If you’re a small business/team and can abide by the rule of six, ice skating could be a great Christmas activity!

TimeOut have a great list of ice skating rinks in London and apparently some are going to be bigger than ever before. Perfect for a safe and socially-distanced skate!

These first two ideas largely depend on what the rules allow at the time. Please keep an eye on government guidelines for further clarification.

  1. Virtual Christmas Party

The virtual Christmas party is definitely a possibility this year and an option you should plan for in case all else fails.

A personal package delivered to your employees’ homes could be a great way to spread some Christmas cheer. Food and booze are all you need for a great party! So, send it out and get everyone involved on a Zoom call.

There are companies that can organise this for you! Some even offer speciality wine and cheese tasting boxes, for example.

Party activities could include:

  • Gingerbread house decorating
  • Christmas jumper/tree competition
  • Wine tasting
  • Secret Santa

Togetherness is more important than ever before this year. Your employees will appreciate the gesture and be grateful to see their peers in an informal and relaxed setting, for what is probably the first and only time this year.

  1. Online Classes

Unsurprisingly, online classes are all the rage this year!

Each member of the team can host a class on a video call, teaching everyone something that they’re good at. These could range from cooking to dancing, from fitness to painting. Plus, it’s a great way to get some team building in!

Classes are super easy to make festive. You can encourage everyone to work out in their best festive gear, or make some Christmas themed crafts!

The team at 3Search have even hosted some of these classes ourselves whilst we were all working from home during lockdown. We can confirm that they’re good fun!

  1. Virtual Secret Santa

Despite popular belief, you don’t have to be in the same room to play Secret Santa.

In fact, it’s probably even more secret!

And we definitely can’t let this classic Christmas office tradition end in 2020. We’ve already lost too much!

So many gifts can be sent via email now, including:

Or, if you want to get really creative, you could get your favourite colleague a personal message from their favourite celeb on Cameo. This is definitely #NotSponsored! Just something that you need to know about, as it makes a great unique gift that they certainly won’t be expecting.

All you need is a budget and someone to organise who has who and you’ve got a Virtual Secret Santa.

There you have it! Secret Santa all done virtually and contact free. Did we just save Christmas…?

No! It’s not too early for Christmas!

I promised you some non-festive content and here it is.

If you’re after a Halloween themed event for the office, this is the perfect year to do it!

  • A themed murder mystery party would be a great event to host virtually. A fun and unique way to get everyone dressed up and having fun! I’m talking outfits, accents – the works! A real life Cluedo!
  • Nobody’s too old for trick or treating! Send out some virtual tricks (jokes/riddles) and treats (virtual wallpapers to gift cards) via email.
  • A pumpkin carving or costume contest are also great activities for an online Halloween gathering. Prizes for the winners, of course!

Happy party planning, everyone!
