Kate Pennell, Global Head of Brand and Marketing at Howden, shares her thoughts on the importance of job titles. This interview took place at our event exploring 'How women in marketing can shatter the glass ceiling'.

I think with job titles, we just shouldn't get hung up about them because every company is different. What might be the norm at one company isn't the norm at another. You need to think about what a role is going to give you from a skills and an experience perspective, whether you're going to enjoy it, whether you're going to learn something, and remember, culture is really important. 

The thing about job titles is that it's mostly about our ego. We kind of need to get out of our own heads a little bit, put that aside, and have the faith and confidence that those people who are going to make decisions about our careers in the future—whether it's someone interviewing you in-house, at an agency, or a recruiter—can see through the job title and look at your experience, your knowledge, and the results you've achieved to make the right decisions and put you forward for the right opportunities. Think about the opportunity that you're going to get from a particular role rather than what it's called.

Passionate about diversity, inclusion and community initiatives, throughout her career Kate has been on a variety of different women’s leadership councils and led several diversity initiatives. She is also a mentor to many and a trustee of the Royal Humane Society and SSAFA, the armed forces charity.
